NBC throws ‘Crusoe’ a rope

Share

The fall TV season is only 1 week old, and NBC already has begun picking up new series for next season.

On Monday, the network ordered 13 episodes of “Robinson Crusoe,” a drama based on Daniel Defoe’s classic novel about an Englishman marooned on a tropical island for 28 years.

Like the novel, the series will take place in the 17th century and will explore the challenges facing Crusoe and his native friend, Friday, such as marauding militias, hungry cannibals, wild cats, starvation and apocalyptic lightning storms, but also will add new characters and contemporary elements.

The series, from Universal Media Studios and the British-based Powercorp International, has not yet been cast. It will air in either fall 2008 or in early 2009.
