Location, it has been said more than once, is the key in real estate. A home price comparison index by Coldwell Banker drives home that point: The most expensive community in the country is Beverly Hills; the most affordable: Killeen, Texas.

The real estate brokerage surveyed 317 housing markets in the United States, evaluating the costs of a 2,200-square-foot single-family home with four bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, a family room and a two-car garage, in what the company has described as an apples-to-apples comparison.

In Beverly Hills, that house would cost $2.21 million. In Killeen, near Ft. Hood, it would be $136,725.

Seven other California cities rank in the top 10 most expensive markets, with Greenwich, Conn., taking second place. In third place is La Jolla, where a buyer would pay $1.8 million, followed by Santa Monica’s $1.78 million and Newport Beach’s $1.62 million. The top 10 also includes Santa Barbara, Palo Alto, San Mateo, San Francisco and Boston.
