Oddsmakers still like Trojans

USC’s status as a college football power didn’t suffer too much with last week’s disappointing loss to Stanford, according to oddsmakers.

The Trojans (4-1) are still considered a top favorite to win this season’s Bowl Championship Series title game on most future betting boards.

Bodog.com has USC at 9-2 behind Louisiana State at 7-5 and Ohio State at 4-1; Sportsbook.com has the Trojans at 6-1 with the same odds for LSU and Ohio State. VegasInsider.com lists LSU at 8-5, followed by Ohio State at 4-1 and USC at 7-2.

If you wondered where No. 2 California fits, the Bears are 5-1 on Bodog.com and 6-1 on Sportsbook.com and VegasInsider.com.

Florida State (4-1) is a six-point favorite for tonight’s game at Wake Forest (3-2) with an over/under of 43 1/2 points, which is considered low for a college football game this season.

It should be noted that the under is 4-1 in the Seminoles’ last five games as a favorite and the under is 7-1 in the Demon Deacons’ last eight home games overall.

Although trends point to a low-scoring game, a closer look suggests otherwise.

Since Xavier Lee has taken over at quarterback, the Seminoles have scored at least three touchdowns in each game that he has started, including last week’s 27-10 victory over North Carolina State.

Wake Forest, which has won three games in a row, has scored at least 21 points in four of five games and has given up 60 combined points over the last two weeks.

Baseball

The National League Championship Series will start today with Colorado given a slight edge over Arizona to advance to the World Series.

The Rockies, who have won 17 of their last 18 games, are listed at -123 with the Diamondbacks at +113.

But for Game 1, Arizona is at home and is a -127 favorite with right-hander Brandon Webb pitching against Colorado left-hander Jeff Francis.

Webb is the last pitcher to have defeated the Rockies. He gave up eight hits and two runs in seven innings to defeat Francis, 4-2, last month.

Supporters of Colorado, which is 7-0 in its last seven road games against right-handed pitchers, should be confident in Francis, who has a 7-2 record with a 3.54 earned-run average against the Diamondbacks.

Boxing

Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield will go after his fifth world title when he faces unbeaten World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov on Saturday in Moscow. Holyfield (42-8-2), who will turn 45 next week, is a big underdog at +300. Ibragimov, 32, has a 19-0-1 record and is listed at -500 to win.
