After six months out of the spotlight, Spanish-language music station KLVE-FM (107.5) is back on top of the Southland radio ratings, according to Arbitron figures released Monday. KIIS-FM (102.7) was the highest-rated English-language station, finishing second overall in the Los Angeles-Orange County market, as it has for the last year.

KLVE had been No. 1 last fall but fell to third during the winter and then to fourth this spring. But listeners returned in the survey period from June 29 to Sept. 30, and the station regained its top-dog status with an average of 4.9% of the audience, the same figure it had last fall.

KIIS was close behind with 4.7% of the audience age 12 and older. Spanish-language KSCA-FM (101.9), talk outlet KFI-AM (640) and rock station KROQ-FM (106.7) rounded out the top five in the overall standings.

Among listeners ages 25 to 54, a key demographic for many advertisers, Spanish-language stations KLVE, KSCA, KBUE-FM (105.5) and KLAX-FM (97.9) captured the top four spots.

English-language stations did better in the 35-to-64 age bracket. KLVE was still first, but oldies station KRTH-FM (101.1) -- which placed ninth in the market overall -- was second, followed by soft-jazz station KTWV-FM (94.7), KFI and contemporary-pop-hit station KOST-FM (103.5).

In the important morning-drive period, weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m., KSCA continued to dominate, with the antics of Eddie “Piolin” Sotello attracting an average of 6.7% of the audience.

KFI remained second with the combination of Bill Handel (from 6 to 9 a.m.) and Rush Limbaugh (in the 9 to 10 hour). KIIS’ Ryan Seacrest, who had been third in the mornings last spring, fell to fifth, outdrawn by “Kevin and Bean” on KROQ and “Omar and Argelia” on KLVE.

Country station KKGO-FM (105.1) saw its standing drop a bit, from 18th last spring to 23rd this summer. Its sister station, classical outlet KMZT-AM (1260), did not even place in the top 40, and management plans to turn it into a talk station beginning Oct. 29.
