Microsoft Corp. said in a regulatory filing that a European Union fine in an antitrust case might reach as much as $1.58 billion.

An EU court last month upheld the European Commission’s 2004 ruling that Microsoft withheld network data from rivals and bundled a media player with its dominant personal computer operating system. As well as imposing a 497 million euro ($709 million) penalty, the regulator has threatened Microsoft with millions of euros in fines for not complying with the decision.

A fine of that size would be the largest ever assessed on a single company by the Brussels-based commission.
