Joel Pett is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Lexington Herald-Leader. His work also appears in USA Today.

Editorial cartooning often means agonizing hours thinking inside the empty box, awaiting the amusement muse. But let’s be honest: Sometimes the conclusions draw themselves. Mike Keefe hit the wall when President Bush lectured on the lessons of Vietnam. (Wait a minute. Did Dubya earn a Bronze Star or a bronze tan?) Adam Zyglis ditched Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales curbside with the rest of the dustbin brain trust, even as the president lamented that his AG “had been dragged through the mud.” (Hang on. Isn’t mud-dragging a violation of the Geneva Convention?) And an anti-gay-rights senator plays family-values footsie in an airport bathroom and Tom Toles stomps him! This is one incident a certain elephant will never forget.
