Chavez is giving the poor hope

Re “Something’s fishy in Peru,” Opinion, Aug. 31

Alonso Alegría’s description of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez as “a coarse military man” plays into the propaganda campaign against the democratically elected president. His policies of fair trade and self-determination are doing much to end decades of poverty in Latin America.

By using the International Monetary Fund and World Bank to float unpayable loans to impoverished countries and then, as part of the agreement, forcing these countries to sell off all natural resources and infrastructure to U.S. corporations in sweetheart deals, ensures a continuing cycle of poverty.

In Venezuela, the policies of Chavez are giving the poor hope and restoring their dignity and self-worth. Is this why he is a threat to U.S. dominance?
