Cinematheque festival will keep on rockin’

Following the success of its Mods & Rockers Film Festival in July, American Cinematheque has scheduled what it is billing as a “coda” in October: a five-day event that includes the premieres of documentaries about musical greats Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and Nick Drake.

The festival begins Oct. 5 with a screening of “A Skin Too Few: The Days of Nick Drake,” about the English jazz-folk singer and songwriter who died of a prescription medication overdose in 1974 at age 26. Among those scheduled to participate in a Q&A; afterward are Drake’s sister, Gabrielle, and his producer, Joe Boyd.

The following day brings a double bill of “Gimme Shelter,” about the Rolling Stones, and a “sneak preview” of an as-yet-undisclosed rock film. Showing Oct. 7 is “Control,” a film about Ian Curtis, lead singer of the British New Wave band Joy Division.

That will be followed Oct. 8 by a screening of “Dreams to Remember: The Legacy of Otis Redding,” a documentary about the famous R&B; singer who died in 1967, which includes 16 performance numbers. His widow, Zelma, is scheduled to attend.

The next night, Oct. 9, brings “American Landing: Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey,” featuring new interviews and the guitarist’s entire breakthrough performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967. Also on the bill is a short film, “Hendrix and the Blues,” featuring footage of Hendrix, B.B. King and Buddy Guy, among others.

The Drake, Redding and Hendrix films will be shown at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood; “Gimme Shelter” and “Control” will be at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
