Re “Officials find Nevada ads ‘un-Bear-able,’ ” March 30

Nevada officials needn’t work too hard in their quest to lure businesses from California. The California Legislature is doing all the heavy lifting.

Nevada’s advertisements to lure our businesses to the desert should be challenged. All we need to do is adopt the Nevada way of doing business.

Its gambling model lures people from all over the world to come with their hard-earned money so Nevada can tax them. It is effective, considering the number of empty suitcases that are carted home. To replicate Nevada’s success, we create our own gambling spa somewhere between Barstow and the state line. In time, it would rival Las Vegas, particularly when we construct a monorail to connect our new spa with such attractions as the beaches, the mountains, Disneyland, Hollywood and California hotels. Think of all the jobs and taxes this spa would bring in. Nevada and California would then have parity in dealing with businesses.

In this article, state Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles) just doesn’t seem to get it. As someone trying to get a new business started, I constantly wonder if I made the right decision to stay in a state with one of the highest income- and sales-tax rates in the nation. Add in a hefty city business tax and whatever tax increases the state government is planning, and I may end up being one of those people who has to leave in order to succeed.
