Praising Arizona

Re “Arizona’s slamming door,” April 5

Are you watching this, Orange County? You do not have to wait for legislation from the do-nothings in Washington to combat illegal immigration. Arizona’s Maricopa County is realizing smaller class sizes, efficient emergency rooms, adequate social service programs and larger tax revenues -- simply by enforcing the laws on the books and writing a measure to force businesses to comply with employment regulations by revoking their business licenses for second offenses of hiring illegal immigrants. I feel sorry for the plight of the illegal immigrants, but the law -- if duly enforced -- will eventually catch up to those who break it.

With a measure written by state Rep. Russell Pearce, businesses are forced to pay payroll taxes and hire citizens who pay taxes as well. If Orange County can follow Maricopa’s lead, maybe my 2-year-old daughter and her peers can go to a public school where they can play sports and learn to play music without costing John Q. Taxpayer a small fortune.

Think we could get Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Arizona state and county legislators to come to California? Just think, our taxes would go down and our schools and emergency care would improve. Not a bad thing.
