Council votes for billboard plan
The City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday to a plan to install two double-sided billboards next to the 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.
On a 13-1 vote, the council decided that the four signs could go up along the freeway near San Pedro Street as part of a larger deal to build a nine-acre park in South Los Angeles. Two of the signs will be digital. Billboard opponents, as well as the city Planning Commission, have warned that motorists will be distracted by the changing images.
The proposal is also designed to settle a lawsuit over the removal of 14 billboards from Santa Monica Boulevard seven years ago.
