Enforce immigration laws

Re “Order 40 works,” Opinion, April 12
Tim Rutten brings out some interesting points. L.A. City Councilman Dennis Zine acknowledges that modifying Special Order 40 would not have prevented Jamiel Shaw II’s death. While this is true, it unfortunately points out the deficiencies of enforcing immigration laws by the Culver City police and the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. All law enforcement personnel should be required to implement federal immigration laws.
Order 40 appears to impede local authorities from enforcing laws. Costa Mesa now has an immigration enforcement officer who investigates the legal status of everyone arrested in that city. This simple procedure would not only have prevented Shaw’s death, it would help Los Angeles control gang activity by handing illegal gang members over for deportation.
