EXPRESSJET

From its Ontario launching pad, this revamped commuter airline offers a cheap way out of town to smaller airports like Monterey, Tucson and Austin. We can’t decide what we liked best -- the smooth new planes, the XM radio in the seats or being freed from LAX security lines.

TERI & YAKI

The skinless, boneless chicken at this “Asian comfort food” mini-chain (319 S. Arroyo Parkway and 229 N. Lake Ave. in Pasadena and 106 S. Myrtle Ave. in Monrovia) is marinated for 24 hours in an addictive sauce, then grilled with just the right amount of crisp.

STILL WATER

We’re already aware that most bottled water is a hoax, so when your waiter asks “Still, sparkling or tap?,” why lay down significant do-re-mi for “extra special” bottled water? Tap tastes just as good -- and you know exactly where it came from.
