Birth defects rise if mom is diabetic

Diabetic women who get pregnant are three to four times more likely to have a child with birth defects than other women, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study is the largest of its kind and provides the most detailed information to date on the types of birth defects that befall infants of diabetic mothers, including heart defects, missing kidneys and spinal deformities.
