13 militants die in attack on U.S. base
Six suicide bombers detonated their vests when they were surrounded after they tried unsuccessfully to storm a U.S. military base near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border today, and 13 insurgents were killed, officials said.
No Americans were reported killed but fighting was continuing.
The militants failed to gain entry to Camp Salerno in the city of Khowst. A Defense Ministry spokesman said Afghan and U.S. troops surrounded the insurgents.
A day earlier, a suicide bomber killed 10 Afghan civilians outside the same base.
Monday In Kabul, Afghan leaders celebrated Independence Day inside a fortified military compound amid a U.S. warning of possible attacks.
