From Times Wire Reports

More than 250 people have been evacuated from an American Indian village in an offshoot of the Grand Canyon after weekend rains and flooding wrecked trails and nearly washed away some rafters.

Helicopters ferried tourists and residents out of the Havasupai tribal village of Supai, but many stayed, said Gerry Blair of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department.

The village in Havasu Canyon is an 8-mile hike from the nearest parking lot.

About 11 campers and tourists remained unaccounted for, but they may have left on their own, Blair said.
