From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Baja California authorities fired 129 police officers, prosecutors and detectives in the second major purge this year of law enforcement officers suspected of corruption or criminal activity.

State officials said the move was part of an ongoing effort in Mexico to cleanse law enforcement agencies of officers with links to organized crime.

In Tijuana, 66 municipal police officers were fired. In Mexicali, the state capital, 18 officers lost their jobs. One detective was charged with murder. Other charges included abuse and torture.
