GM bankruptcy

Re “Buy GM, really,” Opinion, Dec. 2

Bankruptcy is General Motor’s best option.

GM needs to shed divisions and dealers. Too much time and money is spent on niche markets. The Saturn experiment is a failure. Pontiac is a division without any real purpose. Hummer is an excellent product with a small market share. And Saab? Having spent a few years selling Saabs: Please throw the whole division into the ocean. Bankruptcy would allow GM to sell -- or kill -- Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn and Saab.

Someone at GM other than the rank and file needs to be fired. Again, bankruptcy would allow GM to cut the fat quickly.

I speak from the front lines, with more than 20 years in the car business. GM can survive, but nationalization is the worst suggestion yet. Allow the market to realign, and GM will survive. Ford will survive. Chrysler died 10 years ago when Daimler-Benz bought the then-Chrysler Corp.
