Prosecutors said they had identified remains found in a clandestine grave as those of the kidnapped daughter of former national sports commissioner Nelson Vargas.

The kidnapping of 18-year-old Silvia Vargas Escalera in September 2007 provoked outrage in Mexico, which has suffered a wave of abductions for ransom.

An informant told investigators that Vargas had been killed at a home on the outskirts of the city; police found her remains under a patio.
