Punitive damages: A Tuesday editorial said the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that a $79.5-million damage award to the widow of a man who smoked Philip Morris cigarettes was inflated. The court struck down the award because it took into account the illnesses of other smokers, and returned the case to the Oregon Supreme Court to determine whether the award should be reduced.
