Suspected Tuareg rebels attacked an army outpost in the country’s remote north, setting off a battle in which 20 people were killed, the Defense Ministry said.

The attack on the military base occurred in the town of Nampala, about 250 miles northeast of the capital, Bamako, the ministry said in a statement. The territory is the traditional homeland of Tuareg nomads who inhabit the vast desert that stretches across northern Africa.

The dead consisted of nine security personnel and 11 assailants, with many more injured, said the statement signed by Col. Idrissa Traore, deputy director of communication for the ministry.
