Motorola Inc. said Thursday that it was considering separating its loss-making mobile phone unit, in an apparent concession to demands from billionaire investor Carl Icahn, sending its shares up 12.7%.

The company has lost market share to Nokia Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co.

Options include spinning off or selling the phone division, which accounts for about half of its revenue.

Motorola stock rose $1.25, or 10.9%, to $12.75 in after-hours trading.
