Ryan Anderson scored 27 points and California hung on to hand No. 9 Washington State its first home loss of the season, 69-64, on Thursday night at Pullman.

Cougars star Derrick Low attempted a three-point shot in the closing seconds that could have tied the score, but it rimmed out.

It was a fitting end for the Cougars, 17-3 overall, 5-3 Pacific 10 Conference. They finished five for 20 from three-point range. Cal was nine for 20.

Patrick Christopher had 16 points for the Golden Bears (12-7, 3-5), who ended a three-game losing streak.

Anderson, the Pac-10’s leading scorer at 21.3 points a game, was nine for 13 from the field, including five for seven on three-pointers. He also had nine rebounds.

Cal center Devon Hardin, who was averaging 10 points and 8.2 rebounds, did not make the trip because he was ill. Jamal Boykin, a transfer from Duke, started in his place and scored 12.

Kyle Weaver scored 15 for Washington State, which had not lost at Friel Court since March 1.

Taylor Rochestie had 14. Low, the Cougars’ leading scorer at 14 points a game, was only two for 11 from the field and missed all nine of his three-point attempts. He finished with five points.

No. 14 Stanford 65, Washington 51 -- Brook Lopez scored a career-high 31 points and had 13 rebounds to help the Cardinal (17-3, 6-2) hand the Huskies (12-9, 3-5) their worst home loss in five years.

Lopez, a 7-foot sophomore, made 11 of 17 shots in the biggest scoring night by a Cardinal since Dan Grunfeld scored 31 against Arizona State in 2006. Lopez entered averaging 17.8 points.

Stanford won for the first time in Seattle since 2001 and for the fourth consecutive time overall heading into Saturday’s game at No. 9 Washington State.

The Cardinal is currently alone in second place in the standings because Washington State lost at home to California.

Stanford had lost five consecutive games to Washington in Seattle, plus a second-round upset loss in the 2004 NCAA tournament to Alabama in KeyArena across town.

The Cardinal’s last win in Seattle was Jan. 25, 2001, over Washington when Stanford was ranked No. 1.
