Formalwear rules should always apply

Share

I disagree with the assertion that “the traditional tuxedo has given way to a more ‘interpretive’ dress code” [“Goodbye, Black Tie,” Dec. 9]. The purpose of formalwear is to show honor and respect whether the reason to gather is significant (think philanthropic benefit) or less so. A wine and food society dinner may be strictly for fun, but formalwear vividly and visually confirms esteem and gratitude for those who have labored to prepare the meal. It’s not about “me.”

As Mr. Armani noted, the tuxedo “will always be the gold standard.” And there are enough options in formalwear to express your individuality without discarding the basic concept.
