From Times Wire Reports

A bomb attack on a civilian bus killed 23 people and wounded 67 today in central Sri Lanka, the military said.

The blast in the town of Buttala in the central district of Moneragala was the latest in a series of attacks blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels, who are fighting to create an independent state in the island’s north and east.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam routinely denies involvement in such attacks.

A 2002 cease-fire formally ends today, two weeks after the government announced it was withdrawing from the pact.

The government is also accused of hundreds of truce violations.
