THE SHORT SET: GETTY UP AND GO!
Think your tyke is too young to gain an appreciation of classical art?
When gallery teacher Sabina Miller says “nine-headed snake monster,” little jaws drop and you can almost hear the claw of some mythological beast clacking on the mosaic floors. “And what happened when you cut off one of its heads?” Miller asks the wide-eyed wee ones. “Two heads grew back!” That really got their attention, just like the tale of Hercules slaying a lion with his bare hands.
The Getty Villa’s weekend Art Odysseys for Families is geared for the short-attention-span set. In a quick 45 minutes, kids pick up just enough culture to keep them entertained, with interest-piquing tidbits on art and history. They’ll learn how a Roman family lived, including how the ancients collected rain water in the entryway to use as air conditioning. Kids also get to do an art project among the antiquities at the end.
Yeah, there might be a bad dream that night about a three-headed dog, but that’s a small price to pay for a little cultural enlightenment. 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, free with advanced ticket to Getty Villa, 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.
