6 suspects slain in pre-Carnaval raid
At least six alleged drug traffickers were killed as heavily armed police cracked down on gangs before Rio de Janeiro’s famed Carnaval, sweeping through two slums with armored vehicles.
Carnaval celebrations get into high gear Friday night in Rio, one of the world’s most crime-ridden cities. Violence often breaks out, but usually evaporates as festivities begin.
The commander of the police raid said those killed “were all bandits, all actively resisting” a raid aimed at seizing drugs and stolen vehicles.
