Abu Ghraib detainees file suit

From Times Wire Reports

Three Iraqis and a Jordanian filed federal lawsuits alleging they were tortured by U.S. defense contractors while detained at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq in 2003 and 2004.

The lawsuits -- filed in Greenbelt, Md.; Columbus, Ohio; Seattle; and Detroit -- allege that those in the prison were subjected to forced nudity, electric shocks, mock executions and other inhumane treatment. A similar suit was filed in Los Angeles in May.

Allegations of abuse at the Baghdad prison erupted in 2004 with the release of pictures of grinning U.S. soldiers posing with detainees, some naked, being held on leashes or in humiliating positions. Eleven U.S. soldiers were convicted of breaking military laws, five others disciplined. Private contractors have not been charged with abuse at the prison.
