THE ENABLER

Share

The Enabler has a group of hard-partying friends who like to end a weekend of amoral behavior by sucking down margaritas in soccer-ball-sized glasses at Villa Sombrero in Highland Park on Sunday afternoons. For them, this is taking it easy. After two $9 tequila delivery mechanisms, they can ensure themselves a 5 p.m. bedtime and the requisite 15 hours of sleep they’ll need in time to start work on Monday.

If the only thing heroic about you is your alcohol tolerance, the wall decor at Villa Sombrero should be inspiring. Every inch of space is filled with murals of Aztec warriors bedecked in feathers and spears cradling nearly passed-out damsels in distress who are wearing little more than torn blouses and hiked-up skirts (and occasionally holding Bambi-like fawns). The scene will be familiar to anyone who has spent a Friday night with the Enabler, who has played both roles on varying occasions.

The food is serviceable Mexican fare (save the impossibly fresh and tasty guacamole, which is made by your server on a rolling cart beside your table -- a perfect touch for hungry lushes), but if it’s hair of the dog you’re after, Villa Sombrero will give you the whole perro.
