Taking the fun out of fireworks

Re “Lovely, but loaded with pollutants,” July 4

I read with some disbelief The Times article that diagnosed all the pollution created by fireworks displays. My disbelief lay not with the facts but with the mentality of seeking the bad in everything we do. With all that’s going on in the world, do we really need to fear our Fourth of July fireworks show?

In the spirit of this article, I propose the following projects for your fine paper. “Thanksgiving -- caloric sharing with family and friends,” documenting the irresponsibility of a large meal in an overweight society. “The Rose Bowl epidemic,” chronicling the progression of disease created by 100,000 people tightly congregated during flu season. And finally, “Birthday cake or carbon inferno,” showing that the candles on one birthday cake, multiplied by the 300 million people in the United States, make a carbon emissions disaster.
