Santos gets Mexican title
TORREON, Mexico -- Santos tied Cruz Azul, 1-1, in Sunday’s second-leg final and won the Mexican league title, 3-2, on aggregate. Santos won the first leg, 2-1, on Thursday.
On Sunday, Argentine striker Emmanuel Luduena scored in the 16th minute, and though Cruz Azul tied it when midfielder Jaime Lozano converted a cross from Gerardo Torrado in the 82nd, Santos won its third title after championships in 1996 and 2001.
“We’ll celebrate with a lot of humility. We owe it to the group,” said Luduena, who played despite an injury to his right knee.
“It was a difficult moment, with an injury to my leg, but I was able to give a goal to these people, to the management that believed in me.”
Ecuador’s Christian Benitez, who scored one goal and set up another in the first leg win, was ecstatic.
“This is something beautiful,” he said. “Ever since I got here I said that I wanted to win something, and now we did, thank God for this. My heart feels good.”
