Re “Re-upping in Iraq,” Opinion, June 11
Max Boot gives every reason in the book to explain why Iraqis are balking at the status of forces agreement the Bush administration is trying to negotiate except the real one: The Iraqi people don’t want us there. Their politicians know this, and for that reason they are unlikely to accept an agreement that gives Iraq limited sovereignty.
I’d like to see Boot produce one poll that shows a majority of Iraqis want us there. Then produce another that shows a majority of Americans approve of a permanent presence in that nation.
Trying to ram this agreement through in the waning days of his administration merely demonstrates what a cynical politician President Bush is.
