Update -- The Sparks and Silver Stars will battle for Western Conference supremacy in the first game of the season between the conference’s two best teams. The Sparks, who sit 1 1/2 games ahead of the Silver Stars, are on a four-game winning streak that includes victories over the Eastern Conference’s two best teams, Connecticut and Detroit. Coach Michael Cooper’s decision to start Keisha Brown at point guard was made at the start of the streak. Brown has averaged 5.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds a game. The Silver Stars are also on a four-game winning streak, led by two stars at very different stages of their careers. Sophia Young, in her third year from Baylor, leads the team in scoring at 17.3 points per game, and Becky Hammon, in her 10th season, leads the team in assists (4.6) and is second to Young in scoring (14.3).
