IS DIGITAL TECH AN ART ‘CRUTCH’?

I’d like to comment on Loke Kawakita’s response to “Looking at the City in a New Light, and Seeing What Develops.” [“Where Is the Art?” Letters, June 19]:

Why does Kawakita consider using digital technology as taking the artistry out of photography? Are artists only to use old technology and techniques? Remember, photography was once thought of as a “crutch” by painters. Let’s not limit the creative minds of artists; art can be made of anything and made any way the artist feels suits their concept.

By the way, there’s a whole host of artists using cellphone photography in their quest for creativity. Maybe Kawakita should give it a try.
