Ex-inmates are held in jail death
Authorities have arrested two former inmates suspected of involvement in the jail beating death of John Derek Chamberlain.
Raul Villafana, 21, and Jeremy Dezco Culmann, 24, were arrested Wednesday and booked at Orange County Jail.
Bail for Culmann was set at $1 million, and Villafana was ordered held without bail.
Nine inmates have now been charged in the October 2006 killing. Chamberlain, 41, had been arrested on suspicion of domestic battery and possession of child pornography.
Chamberlain’s father alleged in a lawsuit that jail officials identified his son as a molester to other inmates.
Jail deputies stationed in a glass-enclosed guard station that overlooks the cubicle where Chamberlain was beaten and tortured said they were not aware of the attack until afterward.
