Troops join effort against drug gangs
Camouflage-clad troops flew to the northern city of Ciudad Juarez to try to help quell a surge in violence by drug gangs.
The troops and federal police are opening a new front in President Felipe Calderon’s 15-month-old war on drug cartels. Already about 25,000 soldiers and federal police have deployed in hot spots across Mexico, especially along the U.S. border.
About 200 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Ciudad Juarez this year, about 10 times as many as a year ago.
