OC center rolls out dance, music lineups
A repeat of its popular “Fall for Dance” festival and a dance gala featuring a dozen ballet stars, including Diana Vishneva, Angel Corella and Alina Cojocaru, will highlight the 2008-09 season at the Orange County Performing Artscenter.
The second “Fall for Dance” festival, showcasing an eclectic, as yet unannounced lineup of companies, will run Oct. 2-5. Last year, the festival, modeled on a similar event at New York’s City Center, displayed a range of styles, including classical and contemporary ballet and modern and world dance. Tickets will cost $10 for each day.
The dance gala, to take place May 21, 2009, will be available only with the purchase of a dance series ticket package. Boris Eifman, artistic director of the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, which will appear on the series, will choreograph a new work for the occasion.
Companies on the dance series will include the Kirov Ballet, performing “Don Quixote” and “Giselle” (Oct. 7-12); San Francisco Ballet, celebrating its 75th anniversary season with works by Balanchine (Nov. 11-16); Compania Flamenco Jose Porcel (Dec. 11-14); and the Eifman Ballet, dancing the Southern California premiere of Eifman’s “Eugene Onegin” (May 20 and 22-24, 2009).
The concert series will include the Escher String Quartet (Sept. 27), the Johannes and Guarneri String Quartets (Nov. 19), the Emerson String Quartet (Dec. 2) and harpsichodist Richard Egarr directing the Academy of Ancient Music (March 20, 2009).
Broadway shows making their first appearances at the Artscenter will include “The Color Purple” (Nov 18-30), “Avenue Q” (March 31-April 12, 2009), “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (July 7-19, 2009) and “Legally Blonde” (Sept. 8-20, 2009).
Barbara Cook and Deborah Voigt will sing together Dec. 6 on the cabaret series. Blue Note Records’ 70th anniversary tour will appear Jan. 23-24 on the jazz series.
A “Salute to Vienna” program, modeled on the traditional Viennese New Year’s concert, will return to the Artscenter on Jan. 3.
