Other deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait or who died at a military hospital of their injuries:

Bryan E. Bolander, 26, of Bakersfield; staff sergeant, Army. Bolander was killed Tuesday when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Chad A. Caldwell, 24, of Spokane, Wash.; staff sergeant, Army. Caldwell was killed in combat Wednesday in Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Clay A. Craig, 22, of Mesquite, Texas; staff sergeant, Army. Craig was killed Tuesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Jerry L. DeLoach, 45, of Jackson, Ga.; sergeant, Army. DeLoach died July 7 at Ft. Knox, Ky., of a noncombat-related injury after being medically evacuated from Iraq. Because DeLoach’s death occurred in the United States, Defense Department record-keepers did not immediately include him as a casualty of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit at Ft. Knox.

William T. Dix, 32, of Culver City; private first class, Army. Dix died of noncombat-related injuries April 27 at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, near the Iraqi border. He was assigned to the 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, I Corps at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Lawrence D. Ezell, 30, of Portland, Texas; sergeant first class, Army. Ezell was killed Wednesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near him in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Merlin German, 22 of Manhattan, N.Y.; sergeant, Marine Corps. German died April 11 from complications during surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He was being treated for burn injuries to 95% of his body suffered in a roadside bombing Feb. 22, 2005, in Iraq’s Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was medically retired Sept. 28 as a result of the injuries. German was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His parent unit was the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Adam L. Marion, 26, of Mount Airy, N.C.; private first class, Army National Guard. Marion was among three soldiers killed Monday when their forward operating base near Baghdad was attacked with indirect fire -- a military term that usually refers to a mortar or rocket attack. He was assigned to the 171st Engineer Company in St. Pauls, N.C.

Marcus C. Mathes, 26, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; sergeant, Army. Mathes was among three soldiers killed Monday when their forward operating base near Baghdad was attacked with indirect fire --a military term that usually refers to a mortar or rocket attack. He was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Polk, La.

David P. McCormick, 26, of Fresno, Texas; specialist, Army. McCormick was killed Monday in a rocket attack on his forward operating base near Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

David L. McDowell, 30, of Ramona, Calif.; sergeant first class, Army. McDowell was killed in a firefight Tuesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Bastion in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, southwest of Kabul. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Andrew. R. Pearson, 32, of Billings, Mont.; captain, Army. Pearson was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Mark A. Stone, 22, of Buchanan Dam, Texas; sergeant, Army. Stone was among three soldiers killed Monday when their forward operating base near Baghdad was attacked with indirect fire --a military term that usually refers to a mortar or rocket attack. He was assigned to the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Polk, La.

Ronald J. Tucker, 21, of Fountain, Colo.; specialist, Army. Tucker was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Jonathan A.V. Yelner, 24, of Lafayette, Calif.; senior airman, Air Force. Yelner was killed Tuesday when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb near Bagram, Afghanistan, north of Kabul. He was assigned to the 28th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D.
