Recall of Carson mayor to proceed

A judge ruled Friday that opponents of Carson Mayor Jim Dear gathered enough signatures for the recall process to go forward.

As early as Tuesday, the Carson City Council could set a date for a special election, which could happen in August or September. Dear had hoped that thousands of signatures would be disqualified.

But Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu ruled that Dear’s opponents had prevailed. The recall effort is being led by Carson Citizens for Reform, including Vera Dewitt, a former mayor and the owner of a bail bonds company.

The group has accused Dear of being demeaning to the public and of being too cozy with developers. Dear said he was disappointed by the judge’s ruling and said a special recall election was a waste of taxpayer money because he is up for reelection next year.

“I disagree with the judge’s decision,” Dear said. “If it comes to a recall election, I’m very confident the voters of Carson will retain me in the mayor’s seat.”
