Al Qaeda fugitive is sent to jail

Jaber Elbaneh, an Al Qaeda operative who had roamed free in Yemen despite a $5-million reward offered by the U.S. government for his capture, was jailed by a judge.
Elbaneh’s detention was ordered a day after an article appeared in the Washington Post on how he was protected by President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The Yemeni government has repeatedly refused Washington’s requests to extradite Elbaneh on terrorism charges.
Elbaneh, who holds dual U.S.-Yemeni citizenship, is one of three dozen Yemenis accused of conspiring to blow up oil installations in 2006. He had been allowed to remain free while their trial proceeded in Sana, the capital.
