Eloquence and leadership

Re “Speaking up for eloquence,” Opinion, May 16

Having read Calvin Trillion’s Op-Ed article, I pondered the deeper significance that he must attach to the capacity for eloquence.

I contrast his paean to Barack Obama with the demonstrable fact that George W. Bush can’t articulate his way out of a wet paper bag. I wondered if the implication is that the ability to give a stirring speech correlates with making the best decisions in life-or-death situations. I wondered if it correlates highly with deep integrity that never falters. I wondered if it meant that a man who can give a rousing speech necessarily will make a good president.

I wondered if Obama writes his own speeches.
