Steeped in collegiate history

The 1928 McKenna Estate in historic Claremont Village takes its name from the George McKenna family, known for its generous support of the Claremont Colleges.

The Monterey Revival-style home, designed by Marston & Maybury and built by Clarence Stover, was the site for years of weekly Wednesday night meetings in which students, faculty and area residents met in the wood-paneled library for intellectual debates.

Social gatherings also took place in the high-ceilinged living room and Federal-style dining room.

The two-story residence, on a corner lot of about half an acre, retains many of its period details.

Family member Donald C. McKenna was the founding trustee of Claremont Men’s College, which opened in 1946. The college began admitting women in 1976 and was later renamed Claremont McKenna College in his honor.
