TIMES WIRE REPORTS

President Bush says he regrets displaying the “Mission Accomplished” sign as backdrop for a speech he gave six weeks after the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

“To some, it said, well, ‘Bush thinks the war in Iraq is over,’ when I didn’t think that,” he said in a CNN interview. “It conveyed the wrong message.”

Bush acknowledged that he had other regrets as well, including that he’d said in 2001 he wanted Osama bin Laden “dead or alive” and that he’d taunted Iraqi insurgents in 2003 to “bring ‘em on.”

“My wife reminded me that, ‘Hey, as president of the United States, be careful what you say,’ ” Bush told CNN.
