OVERRATED

Holograms: Yes, CNN, we were deeply impressed on election night when 45 HD cameras enabled you to bring someone from anywhere in the world to your studio. You know what would’ve done the same thing for us? One standard image projected onto a monitor, stage right. It’s a lesson that bears repeating: Just because technology enables you to do something doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

Full-album concerts: Don’t get us wrong: Front-to-back performances of albums can work (Sonic Youth’s “Daydream Nation,” Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks” at the Bowl). But it’s not for everyone. Does Jimmy Eat World need to join this club too? Seriously, if the actual tour for a given album happened less than 10 years ago, we probably still remember what it sounds like live.

UNDERRATED

Sons and Daughters: Their name may sound like a new basic cable family drama, but this Glasgow band’s latest album, “This Gift,” is not to be missed for those who think indie rock has lost its teeth in 2008. We don’t know why these guys haven’t yet broken bigger, but mostly we’re just grate- ful to have Adele Bethel’s sassy brogue to keep our energy up as the nights grow longer.

‘Dexter’ on DVD: We’re not sure what kept us from jumping on the bandwagon earlier -- maybe we were still in mourning for Michael C. Hall’s character David Fisher from “Six Feet Under.” Regardless, we’re grateful to catch up with this serial killer now, but it’s as much for the show’s blasted-out visual style as Hall’s fine work. Never has breakfast looked so sinister as in the opening credits.
