Efficiency in education
Re “Education cuts are made at our peril,” Opinion, Nov. 17
Saree Makdisi warns about the danger in making the cuts to spending on education proposed by our governor.
Makdisi’s arguments against the cuts are weak. So what if California is spending less than the national average for each of its students? Maybe other states need to do some cutting too. He claims, “There is nothing left to pare.” I’m willing to wager that we can pare costs without hurting our kids’ education.
A brief visit to the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters revealed easily observable waste -- and I’m only an engineer, without training in improving operating efficiencies.
