Re “Powerful pull of belief,” Opinion, Nov. 18

Thank you, Michael Shermer, for your insight on the anniversary of the mass suicide and murders at Jonestown 30 years ago and for enlightening me to the syndrome of “confirmation bias.”

As a full-throttle member of the liberal tribe, I greatly appreciate the reminder how far unchecked groupthink can go.

I loved your Cromwell quote and would only add this, from St. Augustine: “Never fight evil as if it were something that arose totally outside of yourself.”
