Russia ships come for maneuvers

TIMES WIRE REPORTS

Russian warships sailed into Venezuelan waters for maneuvers set to begin Monday. The first such deployment in the Caribbean since the Cold War is timed to coincide with President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit, starting today.

A destroyer and two support vessels docked at the port of La Guaira, and the nuclear-powered cruiser Peter the Great, Russia’s largest navy ship, anchored offshore.

The move is widely seen as a show of Kremlin anger over the U.S. sending warships to deliver aid to Georgia, and over U.S. plans for a European missile-defense system.
