Opposition figure is gunned down

A student leader who helped organize protests against constitutional amendments proposed by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was shot dead in the western city of Maracaibo.
Venezuelan authorities are investigating the slaying of Julio Soto, who attended the University of Zulia. The justice minister said it had not been determined whether the killing was politically motivated.
Voters rejected Chavez’s proposals in December.
