Bill would let Bloomberg run
New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced that he was pushing for changes that would allow him to seek a third term, saying he wanted to handle unfinished business, including the “unprecedented challenges” brought on by the recent financial crisis.
In confirming earlier reports about his plan, Bloomberg said he would ask the City Council to change the city’s term limits law so he can run next year for another four years. The current law limits the mayor to two terms.
Council Speaker Christine Quinn said a bill to alter the term limits law would be introduced next week. It would change the limit from two consecutive terms, or eight years, to a maximum of three terms, or 12 years.
Bloomberg, 66, vetoed proposed changes to the term limits law in 2002.
