Mayor accused of pressure tactics

New York City Comptroller William Thompson said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was strong-arming City Council members to support his bid to change city laws so he could run for a third term.

Some members had been threatened with losing committee chairmanships or funding for programs in their districts.

Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser said no inappropriate pressure was applied.

The mayor announced this month that he would aim to modify the city charter so he could seek a third term. Existing law limits city officeholders to two consecutive four-year terms.
